Pre-departure English Training Course

Before coming to Japan, all 25 successful JDS fellows were required to attend the Pre-departure English Training Course conducted at IFL- Institute of Foreign Languages from Feb 4th to Jun 14th 2008 while students from some other countries like the Philippines, Viet Nam, Mongolia, etc..got Pre-departure Japanese Training Course in their respective countries. It was an intensive course requiring all students to work hard not only on English proficiency but also on academic study. The first part of the course mainly focused on TOEFL skills: listening, grammar, and reading. The second part added research methodology, debate, and presentation skill.

In the last sentence, you mentioned about "debate" and "presentation skills". I use both skills everyday at work.

Presentation helps you to effectively communicate with your colleagues while a constructive debate helps you to resolve problems.

I do presentation at work very often. Although presentation tools like PowerPoint can assist me greatly, it is my motion, my speech and my clear explanation that count :)

A particular problem can have many solutions. Your colleagues may have their own solutions to that problem too, but how can you convince your colleagues that your solution is better than theirs is depending on your debating skill. I debate with my team members everyday. Sometimes I loose and sometimes I win :)

As you can see, colleges teach you all the necessary skills to prepare you to get to work more professionally and effectively :)

The word "effectively communicate" reminds me of the core competences of CIO (Chief Information Officer). Communication is one of the essential elements among other things like leadership, global standard, knowledge manangement, etc. In Japan, there is a word "nominication". It comes from the word "nomimasu" + "communication". "nomimasu" means "drink", so "nominication" means drink for communication. However, "people face tradeoff". Drinking can improve business communication, but it can also lead to family conflict. As you may have observed in real life. Wife always complaint about her husband's drinking like a fish.
